Initially on swinging into this wide driveway, one was confused, as it looked just like a road, with industrial sized verges and drains. On the right side was an overbearing mound of excavated dirt, and on the left a stately hundred year old oak.

The design challenge was to create an appealing entrance, that felt more symmetrical and welcoming, definitely save the oak tree and add an electric gate for security.

Reducing the right side significantly involved dynamite, huge diggers and an engineer. Saving the antique oak tree whilst construction ensued, involved wrapping it with a wire mesh fence, and threatening anyone who breached said fence with a huge fine.

A stone wall, part of the “genius loci” of Connecticut, (spirit of place) already existed along the property line. This was extended and two half circles created. Three Armstrong maples were planted on the right to mirror the heft of the old oak.

On the hill sugar maples and native trees were planted to hold the slope. Shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals that the deer did not love were planted in the two semi circles.

The homeowner continued a wonderful family tradition of painting a rock to reflect significant days and holidays, giving passersby a reason to pause, observe and often chuckle!
